Avería wasn’t really “designed.” The usual process of studying typefaces, sketching characters, and developing Bézier curves wasn’t of interest to Avería’s creator, Dan Sayers (also known as “iotic”). He’s not a designer, but a curious software engineer and app developer. In 2011, shortly after finishing his second degree, He wondered what would happen if he averaged his system’s 725 Google Fonts into a typeface. Avería was the result.
The process was arduous, taking almost a year of Sayers’ free time. After struggling with blurriness and thresholds, he created Font Path Viewer, a free app that shows your system font’s outlines. Finally, he split each letter contour into 500 equally distanced points, averaging the positions of each until he had a typeface. Avería comes in three weights with italics and several families—Libre, Serif, Sans, and Gruesa—all created by the same brilliant, convoluted method. It was released under the SIL Open Font License in 2011.
